some random thoughts

I’m kind of curious who actually reads these blurbs. Most of my old friends have drifted away and almost all of my new friends don’t know about this.

  1. geometry wars is extremely addicting
  2. i want another monitor with component input -.-
  3. karaoke is really fun
  4. my schedule for next semester is so screwed
  5. i have too many personal projects to be able to focus on one for any meaningful length of time
  6. someone said that i was not a typical eecs major (he wouldn’t have guessed I was an eecs major had he not known beforehand) – awww, i try so hard to give off the eecs vibe too :P just kidding, it’s nice to know i’m somewhat normal.
  7. i want a couch in my room so i can play video games and watch movies on my monitor without having to sit in my chair
  8. i haven’t sat back and stared at clouds for a long time
  9. i wish i was an expert in a specific domain of computing – i’m kind of dabbling in everything and i’m a decent all-around person, but it’s kind of depressing knowing there isn’t an area that i really understand and can innovate/research new tangents
  10. crushcrushcrush :]

lonely* with a positive second derivative and an uncertain approaching inflection point. busy* with a positive slope and no end in sight. I dream of INSERT INTO schedule VALUES(‘break’, ‘now’); but it’s not likely to happen. sigh.

*graphed vs time.

Run, run, and run some more

So I haven’t been exercising at all since the semester began and I was beginning to feel lazier and lazier and worried about any health implications. So we (me, steven, uppili, aleksey) went over to maxwell field for engineering sports night and we played 3 hours of ultimate frisbee until 12:30am. It was insanely fun. I got really really tired at the end, but it was totally worth it – I got to run around and I met some other fellow engineers. Good thing we kept moving, cause it was pretty damn cold otherwise. I need to do this kind of thing more often.

We got accepted into round 2 of imagine cup! well, pretty much everyone who submitted an entry and was eligible was accepted, but still, that means that we don’t have too much competition. 105 total teams, top 20 teams are ranked, top 6 go to france. So it’s time to get coding again :)

I added categories and file titles to the upload system. Are there any other features you guys want?

That reminds me, I have some sort of eternal tug-of-war with free languages and Microsoft. First I started out somewhere in the middle – Java, then moved to Microsoft – C#/XNA/DirectX, then to free stuff – PHP, MySQL, Javascript, and now I’m trending back towards C#/XNA again. And I want to learn ASP.NET, F#, Script#, and Silverlight. Microsoft did a good job indoctrinating me with J#/C# :P Does anyone want to learn a language with me and build something cool while we’re at it?

AHHhhhhh. I upgraded WP and it reset my theme. GRrrrrr. Time to get hacking away at it again. I was going to make a maybe-meaningful post too.

i wore jeans today! for…i guess the first time in public? the pockets are so much smaller :( i can’t fit my zune in my right pocket anymore (in case you were curious, i keep my wallet, cellphone, and zune in the right pocket and yes, they fit with no problem. in fact, i had a deck of cards and a pad of post-its the other day when i went to talk to people for internships). that reminds me, i got a deck of microsoft cards and they have microsoft technologies listed on the cards. did you know there’s a mac division in microsoft? or a robotics division? yea, anyway, it makes me want to work even harder so i may someday get to work on xna/xbox/zune stuff. exciting. oh, i got another google tshirt :D except it’s an XL, so i can’t really wear it. someday, i’m going to go collect tech company tshirts. or maybe just google’s. the google logo totally owns microsoft’s logo.

it’s amazing how fast i can get sidetracked. i was looking up compsci/programming/animation information for our game, and i stumbled upon pixar’s archive of published articles and there were a bunch about ratatouille, so i decided to watch it and now i have an urge to learn fluid simulation and make my own liquid animations. hehe. i’m so excited for ucbugg/maya. i hope i’m not overloading myself. my sociology reader is 586 pages. what. the. fuck. sometimes, i really wish i had gone on to usc for the game programming major. sigh. at least i’m learning a whole hell of a lot in cs classes here in areas i normally wouldn’t have delved into (scheme, functional programming, etc).

Ugh. The subprime mortage stuff sucks. Not because it affects me directly, but because now interest rates are down, and I just started saving significant amounts of money. Two weeks ago, I could’ve gotten a CD with 5.18% interest, and now it’s down to 4.45%. WTF :( At least I’m still getting 5.05% on my savings but I don’t know how long that will last. fucking unresponsible people. Is it that hard to spend only what you have and save enough for emergencies? Such a simple concept, yet so many people blow it and now we wind up in a recession. Does this make me greedy or just a normalish annoyed person?

I started keeping track of the hours I work for ACM, but I have no clue how much I’m being paid for it. Hopefully something nice, and then I might even start thinking long-term in terms of my money. Ever since I got my etrade account, I’ve been more and more interested in the money/banking system. And ever since I got my own source of money, I’ve been spending a lot more too :P Definitely not a good trend, but it feels good to track shipments and receive them.

and i’m not sure how, but my statistics program recorded a hit on fifnet from “death star”. i don’t even know where on the site the phrase “death star” exists. oh, and that reminds me, I felt really bad when mara skywalker died, which is odd cause I’ve never really felt like that before. I guess since i’ve been reading about her for over five years now, I’ve grown to like her as a character. And now she’s gone. sigh. I didn’t even flinch when chewie died. probably cause i had to read it like three times before i realized he died, and I was still kinda confused. I wish this series was more about the space battles and tactics, not the Jedi/Sith power struggle, but it’s still highly entertaining to read. I might even go back and read Bacta War just because it was such an awesome book. 12 little starfighters + freighter or two plausibly take out 4 star destroyers, such an inspiring story. </nerd rant>
